No, if you have cable, the router must send the signal from the modem, the OTA (Over The Air) of the signal. Thus a wireless signal can be achieve. If you connect the router directly into the wall, your ISP will not give you service because you have to go through your modem. If you have DSL, you can do the same configuration, but U can not connect directly to the wall, the only connection you can do this is to dial the direct line-up. If you have DSL, I suggest you trade in your Linksys router for a 2Wire router, like the 2WIRE may be your modem and there is no need for the original modem.
