you do not need all that. I fthe wireless router, as you said the Wii connect to it automatically. Simply go to the connection settings on your Wii. Then go to the connection. Choose wirelessly. Then select the router to use. Then connect you and give you the option to update your Wii. Obviously, you did not connect so yes, and you can update your system too. For more help, just look in the manual. That is always the best thing to do.
